Nintendo of America has claimed a double victory for its GameCube
console,
releasing figures which mark the system out as the fastest-selling
console ever in the US - and first-party title Luigi's Mansion as the
most popular launch game ever.
With more than half a million units sold to US consumers in the first
week of availability in the USA, Nintendo of America claims that the
console has sold at a rate nearly twice that of the Xbox - also
launched last week - and approximately 25 per cent faster than the PS2
last year.
Nintendo shipped approximately 565,000 GameCube units to US retail,
with a further 100,000 going to Canada and Latin America and 75,000 to
rental and other channels. This first retail allocation has now almost
entirely sold out, but the first weekly batch - approximately 125,000
units - is already arriving at stores.
GameCube has already sold over half a million units in Japan where it
was launched in mid-September, according to official Nintendo figures.
