Konami has decided to end the Beatmania serise after 5 years of popularity and fun. This is the game that started the BEMANI serise and music game craze across the globe, and has spawned a whole lot of different franchises such as DDR, Drum Mania, Guitar Freaks and all the games in the BEMANI serise.
Konami have left us with a few words in the Beatmania homepage, and here is the translated script:

The curtain rose on a new era of public performance games
Because the game requires you to perform infront of a gallery, many people were at first reluctant to trying it. However, once it became noticed, it became popular, with the line of people waiting to play often extending outside arcades. This popularity of this radicaly different game soon swept all over Japan. Social events, like game conventions and Internet Ranking became popular, and the game was so popular that it wouldn't be an overstatement to call it a 'social phenomenon'. This is all thanks to you, the fans.
Never before had anyone seen this fusion between style and music. Beatmania gave birth to cultures and fashions that it's creators had never dreamed of.

In 2002, Beatmania will evolve to it's Final Stage

This is 1 huge lost for the music game world and fans across the globe.
Currently the machine is doing a location test or final farewell across Japan. It will tour the 6 most popular BEMANI location in 6 cities in Japan for fans to try the last Beatmania game out and bid the game farewell.
Currently it is unknown what music is in the game, but more will be revealed soon.
